Desalting Sea Water with Ritmo’s Delta 630 Machine

KAVARATTI ISLAND/INDIA, November 5, 2013 - One of the main challenges of water treatment is to desalt sea water, so to give more potable fluid to those countries that have little of it, but plenty of the other resource. Until now, the extremely high costs linked to this operation obstructed the development of such a procedure. A Delta 630 machine from Ritmo Palstic Welding Technology is seen at work in Agatti, a long and narrow strip of sand of Kavaratti, one of the Laccadive islands positioned in the Indian Ocean. Ritmo’s machine is pictured welding in a low temperature thermal desalination (LTTD) facility.

The desalination principle is based on a floating aspiration line, considering that ocean water has an average temperature of 28-30°C at the surface. In a vacuum chamber, the vapour obtained is then be condensed in sea depths of as much as 350-400 m, where the temperature varies from 7 to 15°C. Not only can this system produce potable water at very low costs, but also generate energy, or even air conditioning.

HDPE PE-100 pipes are being used for this kind of job; OD 630mm for the aspiration pipes, OD 315mm for distribution pipes. The pipes were dragged by boats into the island, and brought to dry in between the palm trees. It’s there, in such a scenic site, that we can find the Delta 630 at work.  The welder was equipped with a hydraulic crane that facilitate operations such as loading/unloading of the pipes, milling cutter, and heating plate.
Considering the importance of the project, the contractor opted to have the weldings certified by Ritmo’s Inspector, a data logger that analyses and saves the welding processes, and points out any errors occurring during the welding.
The Inspector allows you to store the welding data, and print the welding reports. You can also manage the saved reports (up to 1020) directly from your PC/laptop and create a data base for future reference, by means of a specific software.
Having perfect and certified weldings at 400m under the sea is of the essence, as the pipes will bear extremely stressful conditions.

Focus: Delta 630

This is a self-aligning machine, suitable for welding ducts for the transport of water, gas and other fluids under pressure, up to Ø 630 mm. The Delta 630 was designed in accordance to the international correspondent standards (UNI 10565, ISO 12176-1)
With Delta 630 it is possible to weld fittings such as Bends, Tees, Wyes and Stub Ends. This is possible because the 3rd clamp can be anchored to the 1st and 2nd (movable) and slide along with the pipe. The fitting have to be locked in the 4th clamp. Short neck stub ends can be welded with the help of a special tool (on request).

Standard Composition

- A machine body with a steel bearing frame, four steel clamps and two hydraulic thrust cylinders with non-drip quick couplings and steel inserts

- Self detaching device: helps removing the heating plate during welding procedure. 

- An extractable heating plate with separate thermometer for reading the working temperature.

- An extractable electric milling cutter for leveling the ends of the pipe and/or fitting, with a safety microswitch and overload cutout. Milling cutter’s plastic control box is protected by a metal frame, and equipped with a fast removing system to speed up the extraction from machine body.

- An electrohydraulic gearcase with a clamps opening and closing lever, maximum pressure and release valves (also useful when welding with the “Dual Pressure” procedure), hydraulic hoses with non-drip quick couplings, a timer (for the heating and welding phases). 

- Digital electric connections box with the high precision (± 1°C) “Digital Dragon” temperature controller protected by a special container and equipped with a reading display and keys for temperature adjustment.

- A milling cutter/heating plate support.
